Strange Things: Using Transistors Upside Down

All BJTs can be used in reverse mode, where emitter and collector are reversed. Due to doping of the semiconductor junctions, the reverse mode characterstics are wildly different than forward mode. Generally speaking, normal applications for transistor would be adversely affected. Current gain is definitely less, for example. But certain alternative applications offer much better performance in reverse mode. One of them is precision analog switching, such as for sample-hold amplifiers, and data convertors. Cribbing from the 1964 GE Transistor Manual, 7th Edition, the following reverse mode precise switch worked rather well with very little effort:
